A long perennial border is located on the edge of the lawn area immediately in front of the Chalet. The garden has wide assessable steps to the front lawn and was created over 2007-2008 by a small group of Heritage Park volunteers including Olive Bayly who oversaw the maintenance of the garden until 2018. The purpose was to provide a show garden for small rhododendrons and associated perennials suitable for today's smaller gardens. Species include a range of Iris siberica, Iris innominata, Iris kaempferis, Geranium, Sisyrinchium, Stoksia, and Epimedium varieties, and new breeds of Eucomis (donated by Manawatu plant breeder Eddie Welsh). A collection of 10 different varieties of Kalmia (donated by Bill Robinson of Tikitere Nursery Rotorua) was added to the western shadier part of the border. Larger ground covering perennials such as hostas, Solomon's seal, hellebores, Brunneria, Disporum and Disporopsis can be found in rhododendron beds throughout the gardens.
