Rhododendron Trials
Heritage Park was home to rhododendron trials gardens until the early 2000. The area close to the Azalea Gazebo with the sundial has now been closed down and re-grassed.
The aim of the trials was to identify and promote New Zealand bred rhododendrons with excellent garden merit.
The criteria the plants needed to meet were that they had highly ornamental flowers, full cover of healthy foliage, were disease resistant and sun tolerant, required minimal care, were easy to propagate and suitable for the different climatic areas of New Zealand.
Assessments were made by a judging panel assessing the plants at least three times a year for a minimum of four years.
Below are images of rhododendrons from the trials which received an award.
